Be still!”
I) Theme: The Savior is the Only Answer! Living Out the Mystery of the Kingdom
In Mark Chapter 3, as Jesus faced the hostility of religious leaders and crowds pressing in from all sides, He proactively called and appointed the Twelve Disciples—guiding them to shift from a "utilitarian pursuit" to a "wholehearted, surrendered following." Moving into Chapter 4, the work of the Kingdom advances further: Jesus not only calls the disciples to "be with Him," but also begins revealing the "mystery of the Kingdom of God" through parables.
The mystery of the Kingdom is not a set of hidden, abstract theories; rather, it is a vibrant, living, and active spiritual power that must be put into practice. From the cultivation of the heart's soil, the manifestation of the light of truth, the hidden growth and supernatural expansion of life, to facing sudden storms in life, Jesus calls every disciple to plant the Word of the Kingdom deep in their hearts and live out actions of faith and obedience in concrete, daily life:
Practicing What You Hear (Mark 4:1–20): Clear out the weeds in the heart's soil, faithfully obey God's Word, and bear multiplied fruit.
Shining for Others (Mark 4:21–25): Receive the light of truth with a capacity of longing, and live it out to illuminate others in daily life.
Waiting in Faith (Mark 4:26–29): Sow and cultivate faithfully, looking to the supernatural vitality and hidden growth within God's Word.
Obedience in Small Things (Mark 4:30–34): Do not despise small beginnings, but exercise the Kingdom's influence of shelter and refuge.
Fixing Your Eyes on Christ (Mark 4:35–41): Look to the Savior amidst life's storms, and experience His peace and salvation that rule over all things.
The Parable of the Sower(可 Mk 4:1–20)
1 耶穌又在海邊教訓人。有許多人到他那裡聚集,以致他上了船坐下,船在海裡,眾人都在海邊地上。2 耶穌用比喻教訓他們許多道理。在教訓之時,對他們說:3 “你們聽啊!有一個撒種的出去撒種。4 撒的時候,有落在路旁的,飛鳥來吃盡了;
5 有落在土淺石頭地上的,土既不深,發苗最快,6 日頭出來一曬,因為沒有根,就枯乾了;
7 有落在荊棘裡的,荊棘長起來,把他擠住了,就不結實;
Reception of Life and the Heart's Soil:
>The Soil Along the Path — Satan Immediately Takes It Away (3–4, 13–15)
"Seed" refers to the Word of God; "Soil" represents the spiritual condition of a person's heart; "Birds / Along the Path" represent Satan and a hardened, indifferent heart (14–15).
The heart along the path becomes packed and hardened through worldly trampling. When God's Word barely lands without penetrating deep, the enemy Satan comes "immediately" to take away the Word in the heart, making it impossible for truth to remain or sprout (15).
Beware of spiritual numbness and hardness! If you hear the Word without taking it to heart or responding, the enemy will snatch the truth away.
>The Rocky Ground — Shrinking Back in Tribulation and Persecution (5–6, 16–17)
"Shallow Rocky Ground" represents a heart lacking deep spiritual roots and driven only by emotional enthusiasm; "Sun / Scorching" represents tribulation and persecution that arise on account of the Word (16–17).
Hard rocks block the depth of the heart. Though one "immediately receives it with joy" upon hearing the Word, because it is not deeply cultivated, "they have no root in themselves." When trouble or persecution comes, they immediately stumble and fall away (16–17).
Faith cannot remain on sensory enthusiasm! It must be deeply rooted and built up in Christ to withstand testing and difficult circumstances.
>Among the Thorns — Choked by Worldliness and Desires (7, 18–19)
"Thorns" represent the worries of this world, the deceitfulness of wealth, and the overcrowding and choking of other desires (18–19).
Though the Word has sprouted, the heart has not been cleared. These weeds steal nutrients, "choking" the Word so that it fails to yield fruit (19).
The key to a fruitful life lies in "subtraction"! If we do not actively remove worldly anxieties and sinful desires from our hearts, the vitality of God's Word will be strangled.
>The Good Soil — Hearing, Accepting, and Multiplying Fruit (8, 20)
"Good Soil" represents a heart condition that hears, willingly accepts, and faithfully obeys God's Word (20).
The soil of the heart is cultivated and cleared by the Lord, free from the enemy's plunder, rock blockages, or thorn pressure. As God's Word is deeply planted within, it strikes root downward and sprouts upward, bearing fruit thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold (8, 20).
We pray that the Lord opens up the soil of our hearts! Hearing and obeying with reverence and submission, God's Word will manifest power in our lives and ministries, yielding a multiplied harvest.
>The Mystery of the Kingdom and the Purpose of Parables (9–12, 33–34)
The Subversive Power of Kingdom Parables: (E.J. Schnabel) Jesus' parables are by no means simple theological illustrations or moral lectures; rather, they convey profound meaning through storytelling, often leaving hearers perplexed, shocked, and challenged. Parables shatter traditional religious frameworks, requiring listeners not to remain cold onlookers, but to enter the story and examine the soil of their own lives.
The Dual Purpose of Revelation and Concealment — "He who has ears to hear" represents seekers of truth with humble hearts willing to respond to God's Word (9). "Outsiders" refers to the crowds with hardened hearts who watch from afar and refuse to submit to God's sovereignty (11).
"Lest they should turn again and be forgiven" (12b): Quoted from Isaiah 6:9–10. This is not God refusing to forgive, but a serious ironic warning and judgment. When human hearts persistently reject truth and remain numb, God's Word instead highlights the hardness of their hearts. Those "outsiders" watching cold from afar, obsessed with sin, fear that once they truly understand the truth and turn, they must abandon their selfish desires to receive forgiveness.
Human Obstinacy and God's Righteous Judgment (Romans 2:3–6) –
Anyone who imagines they can escape God's judgment despises the riches of His kindness, forbearance, and patience, unaware that God's kindness is meant to lead to repentance. By stubbornness and an unrepentant heart, one stores up wrath for oneself on the day of God's righteous judgment, when He will render to each according to their deeds.
Treasure Spiritual Seeing and Hearing! Jesus clearly explained all things / the mysteries of the Kingdom of God to the eager disciples in private (34). Draw near to the Lord with a longing and obedient heart, and never miss out on the grace of God's forgiveness and healing due to a hardened heart or obsession with sin.
Reflection: In our lives today, what are the "thorns" or "rocks" most likely to hinder God's Word from bearing fruit? How can we proactively cultivate the soil of our hearts?
Parable of the Lamp and the Measure(可 Mk 4:21–25)
>Parable of the Lamp ((21-23):
"Lamp" refers to the truth of the Kingdom and the Lord's revelation; "Lampstand" represents a position of public manifestation and illuminating life (21).
The Lamp Is Not Placed Under a Basket (21–23): The essence of truth is to be revealed and to illuminate darkness; God's mysteries will ultimately be brought to light.
Receiving the light of truth is not meant to be hidden, but to be lived out in daily life to illuminate others.
"Measuring Basket / Measure" represents the hearer's attitude, degree of longing, and capacity for listening to God's Word—spiritual attainment is directly proportional to spiritual hunger (24).
>With the Measure You Use, It Will Be Measured to You (24–25):
The amount of longing and obedience a person brings to receive God's Word, God will abundantly grant to them according to that measure; conversely,
If one is cold and indifferent to God's Word, even the spiritual insight and grace they originally had will be taken away.
Pay attention to what you hear! Respond to God's Word with a large capacity and a longing heart, so that your life may continually receive multiplied grace and shine brightly to illuminate others in this world.
Reflection: Are we displaying the light of truth we have received in our daily lives? With what attitude (measure) are we listening to and responding to God's Word?
Parable of the Growing Seed(可 Mk 4:26–29)
Parable of the Growing Seed (26–29)
"Seed" refers to God's Word and the way of Kingdom life (26).
"Soil / Ground" refers to the spiritual condition of a person's heart and the life conditions of this world (26, 28).
"Night and Day, Sprouting in the Night" represents God's hidden work, the secret growth process, and a power beyond human understanding (27).
The Inherent Power and Hidden Growth of Life (26–27): The sower sleeps by night and rises by day, and how the seed sprouts and grows, "he does not know."
"Grain / Sickle" represents the moment of life's maturity and the end-time judgment (29).
The expansion of the Kingdom and the renewal of life cannot be forced or rushed; it does not depend on human manipulation or excessive anxiety, but on the supernatural vitality inherent within God's Word itself. Sow faithfully, and trust completely!
Reflection: In our ministry or spiritual discipline, do we become anxious when we don't see immediate results? Are we willing in faith to surrender the sovereignty of growth back to God?
II.d) The Parable of the Mustard Seed (Mark 4:30–34)
"Mustard Seed" represents the extreme smallness, inconspicuousness, and humility of the Kingdom of God in its earthly beginnings (31).
"Grows Up and Becomes Greater Than All the Garden Plants, Putting Out Large Branches": The seed of black mustard is tiny (about 1 mm), yet in just one growing season, it rapidly reaches 8–10 feet in height, representing the supernatural expansion, vitality, and ultimate glory of the Kingdom (32).
"The Birds of the Air Can Nest Under Its Shade" represents the shelter, rest, and gathering of all nations under the peace of God's Kingdom (32).
Do not despise small beginnings! In ministry and spiritual growth, even the smallest offering, as long as it comes from God's Word, will be grown by God into a great tree that shelters others. At the same time, stay close to the Lord in prayer, asking Him to reveal the mysteries of truth to us.
A Preaching Philosophy of Tailored Instruction (33–34): Jesus spoke the word to the crowds in parables "as they were able to hear it," protecting the truth from being trampled by the hardened while giving earnest seekers space to inquire. In private, when "they were alone," He explained all things in detail to His disciples, showing His attentive guidance for spiritual seekers.
Reflection: Do we often hesitate to serve because we feel our strength is too small? How can we live out obedience in small things to allow the power of the Kingdom to unfold progressively?
II.e) 平靜風浪Stilling the Storm(可 Mk 4:35–41)
Wind and Waves: Troubles of this world, attacks of the enemy, and sudden crises in life (37).
Jesus Sleeping: Demonstrates His heavenly peace, absolute trust in the Father, and sovereignty over all creation (38).
Fear and Questioning in the Storm (35–38): Overwhelmed by extreme fear during the violent storm, the disciples even complained to the Lord: "Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?"
Rebuking the Wind and Waves with Supernatural Power (39): When life's storms hit, do not focus on the raging circumstances, but keep your eyes on the Savior who is with us! Christ is the Lord who rules over all and stills the storm; in Him is true peace that surpasses any circumstance. Faith overcomes fear, and trust experiences power!
Reflection: When unexpected "storms" strike our lives, is our first reaction to panic and complain like the disciples, or can we experience in prayer the peace of Christ who controls the storm?
III) Conclusion
Jesus taught the mysteries of the Kingdom through parables, and He is the Savior of life who rules over all and stills the storm. Our lives must respond:
Cultivate the heart's soil and long for the truth
Live out the truth and illuminate others
Offer up faithfully and entrust in faith
Fix eyes on the Savior and experience peace

Discussion Questions
In the Parable of the Sower, which type of "thorn" do you feel most easily entangles you right now? How can you rely on the Lord to clear away these obstacles this week?
When sudden "storms" strike your life, is your first reaction usually to panic and complain like the disciples, or can you experience in prayer the peace of Christ's command, "Peace! Be still!"?
