THE ANSWER! The Savior

The Opposition to the Savior

I) Theme: THE ANSWER! The Savior

The Opposition to the Savior

"And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them." — Mark 2:1–2

Following Jesus’ manifestation of authority and the official launch of His saving ministry, as the work of redemption advances, the conflict between the spiritual realm and earthly reality becomes increasingly evident. Facing this week’s core questions—

  • "What is Jesus doing?" and

  • "Who are the enemies of Jesus? Why do they oppose Him?"

This is not merely a debate over religious rules; it is a direct battle between the power of the Kingdom of God and human stubbornness alongside the forces of darkness.

Romans 10:4: "For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes." (End: Telos)

Facing the Battles of Life:

  • Recognize the Nature of the Conflict: Christ is the fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan and the source of abundant, free life (the new wine).

  • Spiritual Warfare Revealed: When the power of the Kingdom transcends old frameworks, conflict exposes the direct confrontation between the Kingdom of God and the forces of darkness.

  • Not Partial Adjustment: Jesus did not come to patch up old traditions or self-righteousness; He is the ultimate answer and fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan (Romans 10:4).

  • No Middle Ground: As truth is revealed, inspecting our inner "old wineskins" shows how self-righteousness and blindness turn into resistance, forcing us to choose between "holding on to self" and "surrendering in devotion."

II) Who Are the Enemies of the Savior: Identity, History, and Faith

In the conflicts of Mark 2:1–3:6, the opposition against Jesus was primarily led by the Pharisees and scribes, who eventually joined forces with the Herodians.

Pharisees

  • Historical Roots: Traceable to Ezra the scribe (Ezra 7:10, "For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the Lord, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel"), emphasizing a return to God's Word, studying, and keeping the Law.

  • Origins: Arose during the Intertestamental Period (around the 2nd century BC Maccabean Era). Facing intense Hellenistic secularization and pagan oppression, a group of devout believers rose up to resist, insisting on returning to God's Law and rejecting Greek influence to preserve the purity of the Jewish faith.

  • Evolution & Issues: However, overzealous devotion to accumulating oral traditions gradually transformed their faith into a religious system that prioritized outward form over inner reality.

  • Core Beliefs & Social Status: They believed in the existence of angels and the resurrection of the dead, earning deep respect and admiration among the common people.

Scribes

Herodians

  • Political elites who supported the Herodian dynasty and Roman authority. Though originally opposed to the Pharisees in politics and religion, they joined hands in a rare alliance because they mutually viewed Jesus as a threat.

III.a) Healing a Paralytic (Mark 2:3–12)

And four men came, bringing to him a paralytic. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven." Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, "Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?" And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, "Why do you question these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise, take up your bed and walk'? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"—he said to the paralytic— "I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home." And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, "We never saw anything like this!"

  • Rigid Dogma: Scribes "questioned in their hearts," accusing Jesus of blasphemy. Opposition germinated here, exposing how rigid dogma leads the human heart into unconscious resistance against God's salvation.

  • Authority to Forgive Sins: Jesus declared forgiveness and enabled the paralytic to walk, demonstrating His divine authority to forgive sins and fulfilling the ultimate hope of forgiveness under the Law.

  • Reflection: When facing life's hardships, do we usually seek "environmental improvement" first, or do we seek "to experience the abundance of life in Christ"?

III.b) Calling Levi and Dining with Sinners (Mark 2:13–17)

He went out again beside the sea, and all the crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching them. And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, "Follow me." And he rose and followed him. And as he reclined at a table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, "Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?" And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners."

  • The Barrier of Self-Righteousness:

    • The scribes of the Pharisees "questioned publicly" before the disciples; opposition escalated.

    • Zeal Without Knowledge: They possessed religious zeal for God but lacked genuine understanding of God's redemptive plan (Romans 10:2).

    • Hardened Resistance: Exposing how self-righteousness and traditional boundaries create stubborn, hardened resistance to God's mercy.

  • Fulfillment Through Grace:

    • Jesus declared He came to "call sinners, not the righteous."

    • Righteousness Through Faith: Reminding us that we cannot save ourselves through the Law, urging us to trust completely in Christ (Romans 10:4). Jesus' authority of grace broke clean/unclean barriers, fulfilling God's ultimate desire to show mercy and save sinners.

III.c) On Fasting and the Parables of New and Old (Mark 2:18–22)

Now John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. And people came and said to him, "Why do John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?" And Jesus said to them, "Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day. No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins—and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But the new wine is for fresh wineskins."

  • Shackles of Tradition:

    • Questioners challenged Jesus' disciples using traditional fasting rules. They clung to external religious forms and habits, ignoring the spiritual essence of fasting and the joy of the Bridegroom's presence.

  • Renewal of Life:

    • The Arrival of the Bridegroom: Jesus declared Himself as the "Bridegroom" and used the parables of "new cloth" and "new wine" to signify the arrival of the Gospel of the Kingdom.

    • Fulfillment, Not Patchwork: Reminding us that Kingdom grace and life renewal cannot be squeezed into old traditional frameworks; they must be received with a brand-new life.

  • Reflection: In our life or ministry, is there any "old wineskin" (habit, tradition, or self-righteousness) hindering us from receiving God's living grace?

III.d) Controversy Over Plucking Grain on the Sabbath (Mark 2:23–28)

One Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. And the Pharisees were saying to him, "Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?" And he said to them, "Have you never read what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God, in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?" And he said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath."

  • Christ is Lord of the Sabbath: Jesus declared His supreme authority over religious rituals and Sabbath regulations, serving as the true giver of Sabbath rest and life.

  • Understanding God's Original Intent: The Pharisees dogmatized the Law, using external regulations to accuse and bind people. Jesus used David eating the bread of the Presence to show that God's Law was originally intended to protect life and supply needs, not harm life.

  • Reflection: How does understanding that Jesus is "Lord of the Sabbath" help you break free from current busyness, pressure, or condemnation to experience true release and comfort?

IV) Conclusion and Application

  • Jesus Christ is the Lord of Life: By overcoming temptation, driving out demons, forgiving sins, and transcending legalistic regulations, Jesus demonstrates that He is the sole Savior over the spiritual realm, disease, tradition, and human life.

  • Examine Self-Righteousness: Inspect whether we are trapped in rigid "old wineskins," using external traditions or self-righteousness to resist the vibrant renewal of the Kingdom.

  • Respond to the Call of Grace: Facing the arrival of the Kingdom and Christ, no one can remain neutral. We must lay down self-will, acknowledge our inability to save ourselves, and with a renewed heart, receive the abundant life of abiding with God.
